A group of Explorer Scouts from 1st Purley and Pangbourne will be holding a 36-hour radio marathon over the weekend of 10-12 May 2019 to raise money for life-changing international expeditions and adventures this summer.
Supported by Scout Radio, the show will begin late on Friday 10 May and see each of the participating Explorers broadcast non-stop. There will be plenty of guests, conversations, competitions, pre-recorded interviews and music to create a unique show that celebrates Scouting in our community.
One of the main beneficiaries of our fundraising activity will be Berkshire Scouts “Project Africa”. Our Explorers will be joining a 100-strong contingent to Uganda, where they will be supporting work in the local community that will directly and positively impact young people.
The three-week expedition (end of July-mid-August) will include projects at three different schools in the region, as well as work at the Jinja District Scouts Training Centre and Campsite in Buwenda.
Each participant has been tasked with raising in excess of £3,000 to cover the costs of the trip. They have worked tirelessly on numerous fundraising activities for the past twelve months but still have a few final hurdles.
The 36-radio show is an ambitious and exciting opportunity for the Explorers to push towards their final targets, as well as to showcase Scouting in our community – and beyond!
A core broadcast team of Explorers had their first taste of radio life with a training session in April, kick-starting what promises to be an experience of a lifetime in itself – before the expeditions get underway in late July.
We are hugely indebted to everyone for supporting this crazy fundraising idea and guarantee that every pound raised will go towards the Explorers and to Project Africa.
