Remembering Ayrton Senna with Mark Gallagher

Remembering Ayrton Senna with Mark Gallagher

Guests, News
Residents of the village of Tilehurst in Reading may be familiar with Ayrton Senna Road. A seemingly random acknowledgement of the Formula 1 legend, three-time world champion, and much-loved superstar who tragically lost his life at Imola in 1994. Quite why it's not Ayrton Senna Drive is another question entirely, but we wanted to explore the reason behind the road naming, so set about investigating. We knew Senna had briefly lived in Reading during the early phase of his career, but beyond that our knowledge was limited. So, we sought expert insight from none other than Formula 1 broadcaster, author and business speaker, Mark Gallagher. Explorer Scout Betsy, host of our Thre3-6ix sports show, spoke to Mark about Ayrton, his life, career, legacy - and of course how he came to live ...

Danyl Johnson returns to Thre3-6ix One of the highlights of our previous fundraiser, back in 2019, was the involvement of presenter and singer Danyl Johnson, who joined us live in the studio. The former X Factor semi-finalist chatted with our Explorers on a wide range of topics, including mental health, school life, and Sir David Attenborough! We were even treated to an impromptu rendition of the Jonas Brothers song Sucker. Danyl has been a good friend to our Scout group, 1st Purley & Pangbourne, over the years, visiting a number of our sections to discuss mental health and his Little Help initiative. So, we’re delighted to confirm that Danyl is set to return to the Thre3-6ix studio this weekend as part of our 2024 Malawi fundraiser. We’ll get by with a little help from our...

Project Africa – The Next Chapter

News
This summer’s expedition to Malawi represents the fourth instalment of Berkshire Scouts’ inspiring Project Africa initiative. Since 2011, Explorer-aged Scouts have embarked on three separate trips to Africa, four years apart, as part of the overarching mission to enable young people to support other young people. Project Africa was born out of a county-wide review across Berkshire, looking at international community opportunities. There had been plenty of international adventure up to that point with camps in Europe – and beyond – as well as adventurous activities like mountaineering and on-water experiences – but nothing that focused on the community aspect.   A county workshop brought together adult volunteers and young people to explore various opportunities, and there wa...

Access All Areas with Josh Widdicombe

Three of our Explorers - Ben, Oscar, and Zachary - were given a behind-the-scenes glimpse into life on the road as a popular comedian, when they met Josh Widdicombe backstage at Reading's Hexagon Theatre. Ahead of his performance at the Big Comedy Bash show on Monday evening, Josh kindly gave up half-an-hour of his time to speak to our intrepid reporters for a special feature for Thre3-6ix Radio. It was truly an access all areas visit as preparations for the show were underway; the Explorers were granted access to the dressing room for the interview, adding a level of exclusivity to proceedings. To hear the full interview, you'll have to tune into Thre3-6ix Radio over the weekend of 10-12 May - but HUGE thanks to Josh for his time, and for the support of our Project Africa fund...

2019 Training
We had another bumper interview session on Thursday as we welcomed our recently appointed Queen's Scout George Archer, and Chair of Project Africa Mick Stocks to the Barn in Purley for some pre-records. It was a job for the siblings as brothers Bryn and Ellis and sisters Maddy and Josie assumed interview duties... Tune in during Thre3-6ix weekend to hear more.
